Abreu To The Bronx

The Yankees and Phillies have reached a tentative deal that would send right fielder Bobby Abreu to New York.

The Yankees would get Abreu and right-hander Cory Lidle in the deal.

In return, the Phillies will get four minor leaguers ? Class A shortstop C.J. Henry, the Yankees' first pick in the 2005 draft, Class AAA left-hander Matt Smith and two others.

In addition, the Yankees are expected to pick up the remainder of the roughly $19 million owed to Abreu.

Abreu was not in the Phillies' line-up on Sunday.

Mets And Yankees Both Send Scouts To Zito Start

While neither team is optimistic that Barry Zito will be dealt, both the Yankees and Mets sent scouts to watch his start on Saturday.

Russ Bove, one of the Mets top scouts, saw Zito yield a grand slam to Troy Glaus in the first inning and then calm down and not allow another run for the remainder of his outing.

If Proctor Is Dealt, A Separate Move For Reliever Expected

If Scott Proctor is included by the Yankees in a Bobby Abreu deal, it is likely that they will make a separate move in order to pick up another reliever.

Proctor has been the Yankees most consistent arm out of the bullpen outside of Mariano Rivera.

Yankees Move Closer To Abreu

The Yankees moved closer last night to landing Bobby Abreu, according to sources, as the field for the Phillies outfielder was narrowed to just three teams - with the Bombers believed to have the best chance of landing him.

Phillies GM Pat Gillick, according to a source, had been given the go-ahead from Abreu's agent yesterday afternoon to work out a deal with the Yanks, Mets or Red Sox.

"Of course, when you hear the Yankees, one of the best teams in baseball, and you hear the rumors it, makes you feel good," Abreu told The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa. "They have such great players. They have such a good team. That would not be such a bad situation."

Gillick, according to sources, kept his demands high until recently, when it's believed that he decided he had no chance to trade equally high-priced Pat Burrell. Faced with the prospect of keeping both, Gillick began to lower the price for Abreu.
