Infielder Miguel Cairo and the New York Yankees reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday on a $1 million, one-year contract.
Cairo's deal is pending a physical, which likely will take place this week.
He was with the Yankees in 2004, winning the starting job at second base during the second half of the season and winding up with a .292 average and 42 RBIs. He wanted to re-sign but the Yankees balked at his contract request last December and instead signed Tony Womack, who lost his job one month into the season and was dealt to Cincinnati this month.
Cairo landed with the New York Mets as a backup infielder and outfielder, and he batted .251 with 19 RBIs.

Johnny Damon arrived in NYC late Wednesday night with his face clean shaven and a haircut you could set your watch to in preparation for his official introduction as a New York Yankee.
Although George Steinbrenner said he had spoken with Damon on Wednesday, GM Brian Cashman continued to decline comment on the Bombers' newest signing, saying, "I've got to let the process play out before I comment on that player."

The Mariners took a chance on Matt Lawton, agreeing Thursday to a $400,000, one-year contract with a player who will start next season under suspension because of steroid use.
The commissioner's office announced Nov. 2 that Lawton tested positive for steroids, a substance identified as boldenone, which is used by veterinarians.
"I made a terrible and foolish mistake that I will regret for the rest of my life," Lawton said at the time of his suspension.
Because he tested positive under the 2005 program, Lawton will miss the first 10 days of next season instead of 50 games, the penalty called for under the toughened agreement players and owners adopted under pressure from politicians.
