A Shortstop In Center Taken Out Of Context, Still Possible

Some debate remains over the context and clarity of Joe Torre's reported remarks concerning a potential move to center field for either Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez, but Yankees GM Brian Cashman made it very clear yesterday that - regardless of what Torre did or did not say - neither of the Yanks' superstars is going anywhere.

"We've never talked about it and we're not considering it and it's not happening," Cashman said flatly. "It's as simple as that."

The source of the discussion was a story written by a reporter from Reuters, an international wire service, which appeared late Monday night. In it, Torre was quoted as saying as that the Yankees "have thought about" filling their gaping hole in center field with either Jeter or Rodriguez. He also reportedly said, "It certainly is a consideration" and noted that other star infielders have made similar shifts.

Cashman said he woke up yesterday morning and was "shocked" when he learned of the story. He said he immediately called Torre to ask about the quotes and was told by the manager that the story was "untrue."

Yankees Only Want To Offer Damon Three Years

The baseball world seems to think the Yankees will find themselves in a serious conversation with free agent center fielder Johnny Damon.

But the Bombers, according to sources, have told Damon's agent, Scott Boras, they flat-out aren't interested in even talking about the former Red Sox star unless the discussion revolves around a three-year contract.

As of now, there's no substantive dialog since Boras wants a seven-year deal for Damon. Boras didn't return a phone message yesterday but he's believed to be waiting until next week's winter meetings in Dallas before accepting potential offers from interested clubs, though one executive said he expects the list will be short if seven years remains the price.

Jeter Or ARod In Center?

The Yankees haven't been overwhelmed with the pool of potential center fielders they've seen outside the organization, so it's not surprising that they're looking internally.

The names they're considering, however, are mind-boggling.

Joe Torre said in an interview with Reuters yesterday that the Bombers have considered the possibility of moving Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez to center field to fill the hole vacated by Bernie Williams.

"We've thought about it," Torre told the international wire service. "We just haven't made a commitment to that. We haven't broached it with the shortstops."

His use of the plural in that sentence is noteworthy, since A-Rod was once considered the best shortstop in the game but moved to third base to facilitate a trade from the Rangers to the Bronx, deferring to Jeter as the incumbent shortstop.

Now, it's possible that one or both could be moving again; Rodriguez could be shifted to center or, if Jeter became the center fielder, A-Rod could slide back over and take over shortstop. GM Brian Cashman didn't return a phone call late last night, but Torre pointed out that such a move wouldn't be unique.

"That's happened before, hasn't it?" Torre told Reuters. "Bobby Murcer, Mickey Mantle. Hank Aaron came up as a second baseman. Robin Yount went to center field. It certainly is a consideration."
