Matsui To Talk New Contract With Yanks This Week

Arn Tellem, the agent for Hideki Matsui, said in an E-mail yesterday that he expected to begin talking to the Yankees about a new contract for his client this week.

Matsui, who just completed a three-year, $21-million deal, will become a free agent Nov. 16. GM Brian Cashman said last week of Matsui: "He's a Yankee, as far as I'm concerned."

Yanks Would Likely Have To Part With Cano For Hunter

To Yankees fans who drool over the vision of Torii Hunter in pinstripes, take a step back. Remember how much Twins general manager Terry Ryan received from the Yankees for Chuck Knoblauch nearly eight years ago. Then consider that Hunter is far more popular than Knoblauch was, both with the fans and in his own clubhouse.

Robinson Cano? That's a nice starting point. The Yankees could very well need to trade Chien-Ming Wang elsewhere for another trading chip, as the Twins don't need starting pitching. And boom, just like that, you've unloaded the first two bona fide homegrown players the Yankees have produced in a long time.

The Yankees need to think out of the box in their search to replace Bernie Williams in centerfield. Forget about Hunter or Johnny Damon, or even Vernon Wells. They don't need an All-Star bat, just someone who can catch the ball and keep the offense moving with strong fundamental hitting.

Bowa Joins Yanks Staff As 3rd Base Coach

Updated: Oct. 27, 2005, 5:21 PM ET Bowa to become Yankees' third base coachESPN.com news services

Larry Bowa accepted the New York Yankees' offer to become the team's third base coach Thursday.

A former manager of the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies, Bowa said he's prepared to work for Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who doesn't hesitate to second-guess his coaches.

"You'll be on the hot seat. You don't like it, don't take the job," Bowa, who just completed his first season as a baseball analyst with ESPN, said recently at the World Series. "Everybody's got a boss -- I don't mean that [as in] 'The Boss.' Everybody's got a higher-up that you have to account for, and that's the way it is."
