Sticking It To The Sox

The Yankees will sign another Boston Red Sox castoff on Tuesday: Mark Bellhorn, the second baseman who homered in Games 6 and 7 of the American League Championship Series last fall.

Mark Rodgers, Bellhorn's agent, said Monday night that he was speaking to several teams, including the Yankees, and that Bellhorn hoped to join a new team as soon as he cleared waivers at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman did not return a call seeking comment, but Bellhorn confirmed the signing in an interview with MLB.com.

"I'll do whatever they need me to do," Bellhorn said. "I can play a lot of positions, I can pinch-run, pinch-hit - whatever they need from me."

Bellhorn spoke to MLB.com from the airport in Phoenix, where he was catching a flight to Seattle to join the Yankees.

"It's a playoff team, a team that's got a chance," Rodgers said of the Yankees. "The bottom line is this is a freebie for Mark. He's going to get paid by the Red Sox, anyway. He could go fishing if he wanted to. But this is an opportunity to go somewhere he may not have a chance to go to again."

Yankees Acquire Lawton

The New York Yankees are close to a deal to acquire outfielder Matt Lawton from the Chicago Cubs, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

The Yankees would send a minor-league player to be named to complete the deal.

Lawton is batting .266 with 11 homers and 48 RBI

This would be Lawton's second trade of the season. He was dealt from Pittsburgh to the Cubs last month in a swap of outfielders. Jody Gerut was sent to the Pirates in exchange for Lawton, who has also played for the Twins (1995-01), Mets (2001) and Indians (2002-04).

Lawton, 33, is a career .269 hitter with 137 homers. He is a free agent after this season.

Doc Turns Himself In

Former baseball star Dwight Gooden, sought by police since he fled a DUI traffic stop three days ago, turned himself in at a county jail Thursday, police said.

Gooden, 40, showed up at the jail warrants facility about 5 p.m., police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. He had been missing since early Monday, when an officer pulled over his 2004 BMW near downtown Tampa on suspicion of drunken driving. He twice refused to get out of the car for a field sobriety test, then drove away suddenly, police said.

Gooden, who has a history of substance abuse and currently has a domestic violence charge pending in the court, was booked on a felony charge of fleeing police, and misdemeanor charges of DUI and resisting arrest without violence.

He was being held under a $3,000 bond, a jail spokeswoman said. McElroy said Gooden is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning for a hearing to revoke his bond on the March domestic violence charge.

"We're relieved that he has come forward, and this may be the first step toward him getting the help he needs," McElroy said.
