Two Teammates Want Perez Released

A pair of anonymous Mets players believe it's time for the team to send struggling pitcher Oliver Perez to Triple-A or release him.

"You tell him you go to Triple-A or that's it, you are finished," one Mets player said.

Perez is still owed about $20 million on the three-year contract he signed before the 2009 season.

"At some point you have to cut bait," said the second player. "You owe him a lot of money, but for what?"

Perez, whom the Mets banished to the bullpen two weeks ago, allowed three runs over two innings on Saturday.

The Mets have asked Perez to accept an assignment to Triple-A Buffalo, but the pitcher has refused, as he's allowed to do by his contract.

Manuel Says He'll Take Heat For Pulling Santana

Mets manager Jerry Manuel says he'll take the criticism for pulling ace Johan Santana after eight scoreless innings on Friday night.

New York went on to lose 2-0 to Milwaukee.

Manuel says he never consulted with Santana before pulling him after 105 pitches.

He said he didn't want Santana to face Prince Fielder, who had nearly homered in his previous at-bat.

Beltran Still A Long Way From Return

Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran is still a long way from returning to the field.

He has not been cleared to resume baseball activities and it will be at least a month from a return to the Mets once he is been cleared.

Beltran is hitting and running in Port St. Lucie as he continues to recover from offseason knee surgery.
