Fuentes' Price Shocks Mets

Free-agent closer Brian Fuentes is reportedly looking for a three-year deal worth $10 to $11 million annually, a price that has shocked the interested Mets.

Even though the price tag is a bit high, the Mets are reportedly still interested in the former Colorado closer.

New York general manager Omar Minaya contacted the agents for Francisco Rodriguez and Fuentes on Tuesday.

"Right now we're talking with the agents," Omar Minaya said Wednesday. "But we are getting a pretty good idea as far as what terms they're looking for. Once we get an idea of the terms they're looking for, we have a better idea what we think it's going to take to get these guys done - understanding that markets do change, and they fluctuate.

"Right now we're in the early stages. My understanding is a lot of clubs are reevaluating this market, more so because of the unfortunate financial strain that is going on not only in baseball but throughout the world."

Mets Begin Talks With K-Rod, Fuentes

The Mets initiated talks with free agent closers Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes on Tuesday, according to sources on both ends of the negotiations.

Fuentes' agent described Minaya as a suitor while Rodriguez's said that he expected to have more substantial discussions with Minaya before the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month.

New York is also considering Kerry Wood and all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman although the 41-year-old Hoffman would be a short-term fall-back option.
