Mets Have Roughly $26M To Spend

The Mets will have roughly $26 million to spend on free agent this winter, with a number of major salaries coming off the books.

Pedro Martinez ($11 million), Moises Alou ($7.5 million), Oliver Perez ($6.5 million) and Orlando Hernandez ($6.5 million) will all come off the books, cutting $31 million in salary.

However, raises for Johan Santana, Jose Reyes and David Wright offset that number by $5 million.

Mets Pick Up $12M Option On Delgado

The Mets picked up the $12 million option on the contract of Carlos Delgado for the 2009 season on Friday.

Delgado hit .271 with 38 homers and 115 RBIs even after a rough start to the season.

"Carlos is a key part of our plans for 2009, and we wanted to let him know as quickly as allowed that we wanted him back," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said in a statement.

"Yesterday -- the day following the conclusion of the World Series -- was the first day that we could pick up the option per the contract. It was our full intent to promptly close our deal with Carlos, and that's what we did."

Minaya: Phils Will Be Good Going Forward

Mets' GM Omar Minaya has been watching the World Series and believes that the rival Phillies have a chance to be very good for a long time.

"Every time a team goes deep into the playoffs and wins a World Series, that built-in experience gives a team a different level of confidence; it definitely makes a team better," Minaya said. "I think it is especially true if you keep your nucleus together, and that [Philadelphia's] nucleus will be together."

Joe Blanton, Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, Brett Myers, Jimmy Rollins, Carlos Ruiz, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, and Jayson Werth are all in their prime years and under contract through 2009.

"Their core players are still going to be there, and we know they are definitely going to be good going forward," Minaya said. "It would be a lie to say that I don't watch what these other teams do, the acquisitions they make. But we have to concentrate solely on our team."
