Mientkiewicz: We Haven't Seen Real Johan Yet

Pittsburgh's Doug Mientkiewicz, who played with Johan Santana in Minnesota, doesn't believe that New York has seen the lefty pitcher at his best yet this season, according to Newsday.

"They haven't seen a really good Johan yet," said Mientkiewicz before the Mets and Pirates played on Tuesday. "Johan's always started slow. Even in Minnesota. He always started very slow. But then as soon as the season started developing, he was lights out."

"Let's put it this way: When that team needs him the most, he's going to be there. Come August and September, he's going to be dominant," added Mientkiewicz.

RealGM Note: Santana has an average FIC of 8.44 per start and is ranked 19th in baseball amongst starting pitchers in season FIC.

Alou To Undergo MRI On Ankle

Moises Alou will undergo an MRI on Monday to try to determine the cause of swelling in his left ankle, according to an Associated Press report.

On the 15-day DL after hernia surgery, Alou has been in extended spring training in Florida. He will return to New York for the MRI after the ankle swelled up two straight days, Mets' GM Omar Minaya said Sunday.

Pedro Thinks He'll Be Back Sooner

The Mets don't expect Pedro Martinez back on the mound anytime soon, but the pitcher might have different plans, according to the New York Daily News.

He told a Dominican Republic television station that he could even return to the mound within two weeks.

"We will give everyone the surprise of the month, I think, if things keep going well, and there are no further delays," Martinez told the station. "I am surprised with the way I am recovering. It's going much faster than I thought. Everything is moving smoothly. The Mets know that I'm working and that I will not abandon them. I don't want it to be a long wait like everybody thinks."
