Brian McNamee was close to being hired by the New York Mets last season, but Omar Minaya vetoed the decision, according to a report in the New York Times.
Manager Willie Randolph and hitting Coach Rick Down supported hiring McNamee, but Minaya turned down their recommendations.
"I went to Willie and Willie went to Omar, and it was nixed," Down told the Post on Tuesday. "I think it was nixed because of the Tampa incident [in which McNamee was questioned by St. Petersburg police but never charged in connection with an alleged rape]. There really wasn't much further discussion on it. The Mets didn't want adverse publicity, and in retrospect they were right."

Lastings Milledge will be the starting centerfielder for the Washington Nationals this season.
"These guys believe in me, and they figure I can get the job done," Milledge said.
Milledge said the Mets didn't believe in him.
"Because I'm inexperienced, they like experienced guys, especially Willie (Randolph). Here it's good to have people really believe in you. I really didn't get any love over there. Which is fine; they're a big market, and they are not going to wait around on young guys."
"The Mets have to win now," he said. "They haven't won a World Championship in (22) years."

After getting a call from Bullpen Coach Guy Conti, Sandy Koufax visited the Mets' camp Saturday and spoke with Billy Wagner, according to an Associated Press report.
"I wanted just to talk to him," Wagner said. "I've known Sandy off and on for 12 years. He's probably about the only lefty I can go to and say, 'Hey, what am I doing?' and kind of have somebody I feel kind of connects with me."
