Alou, Easley Staying With Mets

Moises Alou is staying with the Mets, and Damion Easley will return next season, too.

The Mets exercised their $7.5 million option on Alou's contract Wednesday, bringing back the 41-year-old left fielder who was limited to 87 games this season because of a quadriceps injury.

New York also re-signed Easley to a $950,000, one-year deal. The backup infielder and outfielder provided a boost off the bench in 2007 before a badly sprained left ankle ended his season on Aug. 18.

Mets To Pursue Alex Rodriguez

Early indicators suggest the Mets are leaning toward a full courtship of Alex Rodriguez, pending David Wright's blessing.

This is no small obstacle, since ownership is wary of offending their most marketable and loyal star. "We already have a third baseman," is what one high-ranking official said on Monday.

Club officials plan to ask Wright if he still feels that way. As of Monday night, the Mets' third baseman was noncommittal, waiting to hear from ownership.

"Nobody has talked to me about any free agents," Wright wrote in a text message. "I would want to speak with Jeff [Wilpon] and Omar [Minaya] first."

"We can afford him," one Met insider said confidently. "It's going to be a baseball question more than a money question. Do we want him? Is he a good fit for one team? That's what we have to talk about."

Six Mets File For Free Agency

Six Mets filed for free agency Monday, on the first day players were eligible: Marlon Anderson, Luis Castillo, Ramon Castro, Damion Easley, Shawn Green and Paul Lo Duca.

The Mets figure to make re-signing Castillo a priority after trading for the second baseman at the July 31 deadline.

Lo Duca wants to return, but Mets' brass, while not ruling out a return, hopes to instead acquire a catcher via trade.

Mets' Hernandez To Return By Spring After Foot Surgery

Orlando Hernandez had surgery on his right foot Friday, and the Mets' pitcher is expected to be ready for spring training.

El Duque had a bunion removed from his second toe. An ailing foot interrupted his season, and the Mets collapsed down the stretch without Hernandez in the rotation.
