Mets Send Prized Prospect Back To Minors, Activate Floyd

Wearing street clothes and a large, silver cross around his neck, Lastings Milledge took a seat next to Omar Minaya in the dugout as the Mets' general manager made an announcement Friday.

"Can I change my mind here?" the GM joked.

Not right now.

Milledge was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday after an eventful month of ups and downs in the major leagues. He figures to return to the NL East-leading Mets before the season is out, unless he gets traded.

The move opened a roster spot for left fielder Cliff Floyd, who came off the 15-day disabled list and was in the starting lineup for the Subway Series opener at Yankee Stadium.

Pedro Touched By Fans, Tagged By Red Sox Wednesday Night

Pedro Martinez was touched by the fans and tagged by the Red Sox.

Boston's former ace signed autographs when he arrived at Fenway Park and heard an adoring crowd chant "Pedro! Pedro!" as he warmed up before the bottom of the first.

Then he gave up four runs in that inning, four more in the third and spent the rest of the game on the sidelines as baseball's hottest team went on to a 10-2 win over Mets on Wednesday night.

"It's not disappointing at all," Martinez said. "The reception I got, I will always remember that as one of the best moments of my life."

Pedro To Face Red Sox Tonight At Fenway Park

Pedro Martinez is glad to be back at Fenway. Judging by their reaction, Boston fans are happy to see him, too.

The former Red Sox star makes his first-ever start against his former team when the Mets continue their three-game series at Fenway on Wednesday.

Martinez went 117-37 with a 2.52 ERA in seven years with Boston, winning two Cy Young awards and helping the Red Sox capture the 2004 World Series, their first title since 1918. However, he signed with the Mets after winning the championship when the Mets offered him four guaranteed years, something the Red Sox wouldn't do.

How Martinez (7-3, 3.01 ERA) would be welcomed by Red Sox fans in his return was a matter of speculation, until he received a standing ovation during the second inning of Tuesday's series opener.

The 1986 Red Sox Back At Fenway Park

The 1986 Red Sox can't seem to escape the Mets.

The 20th anniversary of the ill-fated team that lost the World Series will be observed in a ceremony before Tuesday night's game at Fenway Park. Wade Boggs will be there. So will Bruce Hurst, Jim Rice, Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and others.

Oh, yes, the Mets will be there, too, opening a three-game series in which Pedro Martinez faces the Red Sox on Wednesday for the first time since leaving after Boston's 2004 World Series championship.
