Floyd Gone In 2007 To Clear Room For Milledge

Omar Minaya has interest in Jose Contreras, and the White Sox will listen, considering Brandon McCarthy is ready to step in. However, the Sox surely would insist on Lastings Milledge, and a Mets official insisted: "Milledge isn't going anywhere. He's going to be our leftfielder in 2007."

Pedro To Pitch Rest Of Career With Special Shoe

New York Mets ace Pedro Martinez will pitch the rest of his career wearing a special shoe in order to rehabilitate his injured right toe.

Martinez announced Friday that Nike is manufacturing a shoe that will allow him to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic and with the Mets next season.

"I'm waiting for a special shoe, designed by a physician, which Nike is manufacturing so that my foot won't keep bothering me," Martinez told the international channel Color Vision, based in Santo Domingo.

"They've got to remove a piece that's under the damaged area to the shoe I used previously," he added.

Martinez said the injury emerged from a bad habit he's had during his career, with the final movement he makes when pitching.

"By having this irregular movement on my right foot, I've damaged the cartilage of my toe," said Martinez.

America's Finest City For Piazza?

The Yankees are officially out of the Mike Piazza chase, a certain disappointment to the former Mets catcher. But the San Diego Padres, whose locale appeals to the 37-year-old, remain very interested.

According to a major-league official, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman notified Piazza's agent Dan Lozano yesterday that the team would pass on the future Hall of Famer.

"I've got nothing to report," Cashman said.

The Yankees intend to carry 12 pitchers, leaving them with 13 position players. With catcher Kelly Stinnett, infielder Miguel Cairo and outfielder Bubba Crosby already tagged as reserves, the last spot likely will go to Andy Phillips, who can spot Jason Giambi at first base. The Yankees ultimately decided that Phillips' defense would prove more useful than Piazza's offense.

Piazza relished the idea of serving as the Yankees' part-time designated hitter. But with the Yankees no longer interested, he could find himself in San Diego, for about $2 million.

The Padres began negotiations with Lozano about a week ago, according to Padres GM Kevin Towers. Said Towers: "[Lozano] basically said to DH was Mike's preference, but if that didn't work out, he'd really want to be on the West Coast."
