Sheffield For Cameron In A Tentative New York Deal

The Yankees' search for a younger, quicker outfield led them to a tentative deal with the Mets that would've sent Gary Sheffield to Shea in exchange for Mike Cameron and Miguel Cairo, according to a major league executive who'd been briefed on the talks.

It was the Yankees who initiated discussion during this past weekend's Subway Series, according to the source. Saturday's 10-3 loss to the Mets convinced GM Brian Cashman that Bernie Williams' rapid decline and the absence of a bona fide replacement would cost the Yankees any chance of getting to the postseason.

The Mets are believed to be seriously interested in Sheffield, and are now waiting for the Yankees to make a formal offer. Mets officials were so convinced of the Yankees' desperation that, had the Bombers not rallied against Braden Looper in the ninth inning Sunday night, thus averting a sweep, Cashman might've pushed to make a deal as early as Monday.

The Yankees' back-to-back wins Sunday and Monday diminished that urgency, but as the club's hierarchy was locked down in a five-hour meeting in Tampa on Tuesday, Cameron's name is believed to be still high on the Bombers' wish list.

"[The Mets] still think the Yankees will come after Cameron," said the source. "He's exactly what they need."

Giambi's RBI Single In The 9th Prevents A Mets' Sweep

Jason Giambi saved the New York Yankees from a Subway Series sweep.

Giambi capped a ninth-inning rally with a two-run single, and the Yankees avoided an embarrassing three-game sweep with a 5-4 victory over the Mets on Sunday night.

Taking advantage of more sloppy defense by their crosstown rivals, the Mets scored three unearned runs in the seventh off Randy Johnson to take a 4-1 lead.

But Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez hit RBI singles in the bottom half, and the Yankees came back in the ninth against Braden Looper (2-3), improving to 2-35 when trailing after eight innings.

Tino Martinez, the last non-pitcher on the bench, pinch-hit and walked leading off the ninth, and Rodriguez doubled just inside the third-base line for his fourth hit of the game.

Hideki Matsui was intentionally walked, and Giambi singled to the gap in right-center.

Mariano Rivera (4-2) worked a perfect inning for the win.

A Sweep Of The Yankees May Be On The Horizon

While the Mets look at a possible sweep of the Yankees this weekend, they better remember their long term plans along the way.

The Mets are still a .500 team looking up at the stiff competition that the NL East is providing this year. If general manager Omar Minaya allows himself to get caught up in the excitement that is sure to be generated from this recent success, he will set this franchise back for years to come.
