Mauer Returns To Twins At First Base

Joe Mauer returned to the Twins on Saturday, but he wasn't in the lineup at catcher.

Mauer played first base and batted third for the second game of an interleague series against the Reds. He was out of the lineup for the last four games because of a bruised right thigh.

"So it serves two purposes," Ron Gardenhire said, saying that Justin Morneau needs rest.

"He's ready to catch. If I wanted him to catch today, he'd catch today. But Morney needs a break. I'm worried that there's rivers around here and that he might jump into the water and try to swim 'em because he's a little frustrated. I'd like him to walk across the bridges now, so I'm going to give him a break."

Morneau Struggling To Hit Left-Handers

Justin Morneau, who couldn't play less than a year ago because of concussion issues, is hitting right-handed pitching like an elite slugger.

He has 10 home runs and almost a .500 slugging percentage against right-handers, numbers close to stars like Joey Votto, Carlos Gonzalez and Josh Hamilton.

His 1.070 OPS against righties is fifth best in the major leagues.

However, the Minnesota first baseman is not hitting lefties.

Of the 168 hitters who qualify for the batting title, Morneau ranks 168th in batting average (.097), 168th in on-base percentage (.123) and 163rd in slugging percentage (.210) against lefties.

One executive noted that Anthopoulos seems to "[call] about everyone."

Phillies Fan Pulls Bartman Move At Target Field

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Minnesota's Ben Revere lifted a foul to third base territory at Target Field.

Philadelphia's Mike Fontenot gave chase and it looked like he was going to make the play for the third out, but then a boy in a Phillies cap and shirt reached up and grabbed the ball.

Given new life, Revere hit a RBI single to make the score 11-7. That would prove to be the final margin of the contest.

"I owe that little kid dinner," Revere said with a chuckle. "He helped me out a little bit there."

Source: Buxton Gets Record Deal From Twins

The Twins agreed to terms with Byron Buxton, the second overall pick in last week's First-Year Player Draft, late on Tuesday night.

Buxton's contract includes a $6 million signing bonus, according to a source.

The bonus is the largest given to a player in this year's draft class, $1.2 million more than No. 1 overall pick Carlos Correa (Astros).
