Nats, Twins Can't Reach Deal For Span

The Nationals wanted to acquire center fielder Denard Span from the Twins, but the two clubs couldn't come to an agreement by Sunday afternoon's trade deadline.

Minnesota was interested in landing Washington closer Drew Storen as part of the deal.

Twins, Nationals Still Discussing Span Deal

The Twins are still discussing a potential trade with the Nationals that would send outfielder Denard Span to Washington.

The deal is "no closer [to happening] than any other day," a major league official said.

According to various reports, the Twins have insisted on getting Washington closer Drew Storen for Span, while the Nationals have been offering setup man Tyler Clippard.

The Twins also were reportedly targeting Nationals center field prospect Roger Bernadina and second base prospect Stephen Lombardozzi.

Phillies Asked About Jim Thome

The Phillies could make another move and it may not be for a pitcher.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that Philadelphia has interest in a player like Colorado's Jason Giambi and that they called Minnesota about Jim Thome.

Pirates Eyeing Deal For Kubel

The Pirates, looking for offensive help prior to Sunday's non-waiver trade deadline, are eyeing a deal for Twins outfielder/designated hitter Jason Kubel, according to a source.

Pittsburgh is waiting for Minnesota to determine if Kubel is available as they remain in contention in the American League Central.
