Morneau Out Again, Not Worried About Back

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has missed the team's last two games, but isn't worried about his back.

Morneau said Thursday morning he "tweaked" his back on the first swing of his last at-bat Tuesday night and insisted the injury is unrelated to the back issue that led to him missing the final few weeks of last season.

"Hopefully I'll be good to go tomorrow," Morneau said. "I don't know, we'll see how it goes tomorrow when I get to the field and start swinging and stuff. Felt better yesterday than I thought it was going to when I woke up. Today, even better."

Mauer Has Five Hits As Twins Rally

Twins catcher Joe Mauer had five hits as the team rallied to defeat the Royals in 12 innings on Saturday.

Mauer matched a career-high with the five hits and flirted with the cycle.

He was a home run away from completing the cycle as he notched five hits for the third time in his career.

Twins Had Insurance Policy On Nathan

Two league sources have told ESPN's Jayson Stark that the Twins have an insurance policy on the contract of closer Joe Nathan.

The policy figures to reimburse Minnesota a "significant" chunk of the $11.25 million the closer is owed this season.

Receiving money back on Nathan's deal would allow the Twins to hunt a replacement closer without actually spending additional money.

One general manager said that he wouldn't be looking for simply a stop-gap if he were the Twins.

"In my experience, it takes 16 months to get right after Tommy John," he said. "Yeah, in a year he'll be throwing. And he should probably be pitching. But he might not be the same for 16 months. So if you're going to make a deal in July, you'd be better off with a guy like Heath Bell, because he can get you through two years if you need him to, and he can set up for a year if you need him to do that."
