Morneau Wants More Rest This Spring

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has come to the realization that he may have to rest at times.

"I'm finally going to let myself relax and realize that spring training doesn't matter," Morneau said.

"It's just about getting ready for the season. It doesn't matter how many hits you get in spring training. I'm going to be playing first base. I don't need to be fully ready to play that first game of spring training, I need to be fully ready to play the first game of the season."

Mauer Won't Talk About Extension With Media

Joe Mauer has no interest in discussing his contract extension talks with the media.

"I'm not going to get into any of that," the Twins catcher said when asked about that chances he might be a free agent next offseason. "I'm just going to open a can of worms. I'm just looking forward to this year, and that is what I'm preparing for."

Mauer's agent, Ron Shapiro, has been negotiating a contract extension with the Twins for several weeks.

Mauer Not Talking About Extension

Twins catcher Joe Mauer reported to spring training on Sunday without a contract extension in place.

He hasn't talked specifics about a potential deal all winter and he doesn't plan to change that now.

"I'm not going to get into that," the reigning AL MVP said. "It would just open up a can of worms."

Mauer is entering the final year of his deal and Minnesota is trying to get a long-term extension done before the regular season begins.
