Twins manager Ron Gardenhire expressed optimism on Friday about re-signing catcher Joe Mauer.
"I'm just letting it happen. I don't sit and fret about it," Gardenhire said. "I think the right thing is going to happen. I think we all know. I think we all know the ramifications if something were not to happen and it would go the other way. That wouldn't be a good thing for anybody. I don't see who, other than maybe some clubs out east."
Mauer is making $12.5 million this season and the last year of his current contract.

Jim Thome isn't going to return to the White Sox, which could pave the way for the Twins to add the slugger.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Detroit are all interested in Thome.
However, the Twins are considered the favorite to sign him.
Minnesota has acknowledged their interest in Thome but declined to specify how many plate appearances they think he would get with Jason Kubel currently their designated hitter.
