Twins Are Committed To Keeping Mauer

The Twins remain committed to re-signing catcher Joe Mauer to a long-term deal.

Kelly Thesier of MLB.com writes that "everything that I've heard from people within the organization is that the club is committed to getting a deal in place with Mauer. And yes, they are well aware of what it will likely cost to lock up the All-Star catcher."

Mauer's contract will expire at the end of the 2010 season.

Perkins Files Grievance Against Twins

A grievance has been filed against the Twins on behalf of Glen Perkins, who is trying to get credit for service time that will help him be eligible for arbitration this offseason.

Perkins and his agent, John Courtright, believe Perkins was kept in the minors while healthy, which cost him service time.

Mauer Sounds Optimistic About Staying In Minnesota

Joe Mauer will become a free agent following the 2010 season unless the Twins can reach an agreement on an extension this winter.

Mauer said he plans to take a few weeks to evaluate the season before meeting with his agent Ron Shapiro, and showed no signs of being impatient about his contract.

"I'm not a guy who will say that I need something done," said Mauer, who made $10.5 million this season and will earn $12.5 million next season. "I think things will work themselves out."

RealGM Note: Mauer was ranked 8th in season FIC, 'deserving' a salary of better than $18.87 million, giving him a Reina Value of +80%. The FIC doesn't take into account the full value of his defense behind the plate, combined with putting up his type of offensive numbers from that position.
