Mauer: I Don't Think I'll Be Ready For Opener

Twins catcher Joe Mauer admitted on Friday that he doesn't think he'll be healthy enough to play on Opening Day.

Mauer has been suffering from soreness in his lower back.

"Yeah, I just have to get healthy," Mauer said. "I don't think I'm ready to go out there and play in any games. I know [Opening Day] is getting closer. I really don't know if I'll be there or not."

The Twins and Mauer now know where the pain is coming from though, inflammation in his right sacroiliac joint.

Twins Pass On Bonds

A representative for Barry Bonds recently contacted the Twins to see if they were interested in signing the all-time leading home run hitter.

"Who do you want me to get rid of, (Delmon) Young, (Michael) Cuddyer, (Carlos) Gomez, (Denard) Span or (Jason) Kubel?" Twins general manager Billy Smith said Thursday. "Which one?"

Smith said that Minnesota would pass on Bonds.

"I said that (outfield) is one area of strength and depth on our club, and we're going to go with the guys we've got," Smith said.

Mauer Wants To Be A Twin Past 2010

Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer is expected to sign a lucrative deal when he becomes a free agent after the 2010 season.

"I have never really thought of playing somewhere else," Mauer said this past week. "This winter, there has been a lot of talk about me playing other places. I haven't really thought too hard or too long about it."

There is a possibilty that the Twins won't be able to afford a player of Mauer's stature.

"I look at guys who have moved around the league, and sometimes they don't look right in a certain uniform. I'm happy playing here. Hopefully, I'll play here for a long time."

Teammate Justin Morneau, obviously, wants him to stay.

"I've said that if he leaves me, I'll never talk to him again," Morneau said. "I think he wants to stay as much as they're going to want him to stay. Hopefully, they'll find a way to get it done."
