Twins Give Up On Tricky Juan Cruz Signing

The Twins have apparently end their pursuit of Juan Cruz.

Cruz is a Type A free agent, which normally would require a team to relinquish a first-round pick as compensation for signing him. But Major League Baseball made its sign-and-trade rules an easier process this year, allowing teams to work out a contract with the player's agent, then get a 48-hour window to negotiate a trade rather than lose a pick.

Twins Like Cruz, But Haven't Made Offer

Reports that the Twins are close to a sign-and-trade deal with the Diamondbacks for free-agent pitcher Juan Cruz are not true, according to a source.

The person said that Minnesota has not made a formal offer to Cruz, which would be the first step to a sign-and-trade deal.

Twins, Crede Agree To One-Year Deal

The Twins and third baseman Joe Crede have agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth a reported $2.5 million.

The pact includes incentives that could raise the value of the deal to $7 million.

Crede, who has had two major back surgeries in the last two seasons, hit .248 with 17 homers and 55 RBIs last season for the White Sox.

"We've been looking for a corner guy. You always look to upgrade, see if you can get an impact player," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I mean, we went into the spring looking for one and this is the guy. This is the guy that we talked about way, way back. This guy, if he's healthy, can do a lot of damage."
