Yanks Would Likely Have To Part With Cano For Hunter

To Yankees fans who drool over the vision of Torii Hunter in pinstripes, take a step back. Remember how much Twins general manager Terry Ryan received from the Yankees for Chuck Knoblauch nearly eight years ago. Then consider that Hunter is far more popular than Knoblauch was, both with the fans and in his own clubhouse.

Robinson Cano? That's a nice starting point. The Yankees could very well need to trade Chien-Ming Wang elsewhere for another trading chip, as the Twins don't need starting pitching. And boom, just like that, you've unloaded the first two bona fide homegrown players the Yankees have produced in a long time.

The Yankees need to think out of the box in their search to replace Bernie Williams in centerfield. Forget about Hunter or Johnny Damon, or even Vernon Wells. They don't need an All-Star bat, just someone who can catch the ball and keep the offense moving with strong fundamental hitting.

Gov. Pawlenty In Discussions With MLB Officials On Stalled Twins Park

Major League Baseball's top officials, including commissioner Bud Selig, reached out to Gov. Tim Pawlenty in recent days about the stalled proposal for a new Minnesota Twins stadium.

On Monday, Pawlenty spokesman Brian McClung confirmed the discussions, which included a call between Selig and Pawlenty over the weekend. McClung said Pawlenty listened to concerns about lack of progress on the Twins stadium plan but he wasn't given an ultimatum or deadline for action.

"Major League Baseball wants to see a resolution to the stadium situation," McClung said. "They didn't discuss specific actions they might take. They're interested in seeing the ball move forward on a ballpark."

On Friday, Pawlenty said he wasn't ready to call legislators back for a special session to vote on the Twins bill, which would allow Hennepin County to raise its sales tax without a referendum to pay the lion's share of a $478 million ballpark project.

The Republican governor has voiced support for the Twins plan but said he won't call a special session without prior agreement on the agenda and duration.
