The Rangers tried to acquire Zack Greinke in December 2010 and lost out to the Brewers.
Less than two years later, Texas might have another chance at the right-hander.
Milwaukee will reportedly discuss trading Greinke if they can't come to terms on a long-term deal soon.
Greinke, who is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, has an 8-2 record this season with 2.81 ERA.

The Brewers claim that they have not made a decision on whether or not they'll trade Zack Greinke, but two rival executives say he'll be moved if a long-term contract isn't reached by the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
Greinke, 8-2 with a 2.81 ERA, is eligible for free agency at the end of the season.
"They're definitely expecting to move him unless something changes and they re-sign him," one rival executive said.
The Brewers fell to 7 1/2 games behind the Reds in the NL Central after losing to Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

The 37-year-old was 1-1 with a 4.94 earned-run average in 18 relief appearances with the Braves.

The Brewers have signed veteran right-hander Livan Hernandez to a one-year contract, according to an ESPN.com report on Friday.
The Braves designated Hernandez for assignment on June 15 and released him on Monday. He pitched 18 games for the Braves, all out of the bullpen, with a 1-1 record and a 4.94 ERA.
Hernandez is in his 17th major league season and has a career record of 175-177 with a 4.40 ERA.
