Six Players Have Options Declined

Six players become free agents on Sunday after their options for the 2012 season were declined.

The Brewers declined a $6 million club option on shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt's contract, who gets a $2 million buyout.

Others whose options were declined included Atlanta outfielder Nate McLouth; Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook; and the San Diego trio of right-handers Aaron Harang and Chad Qualls, and outfielder Brad Hawpe.

McLouth receives a $1.25 million buyout rather than a $10.65 million salary for next year under the contract he signed with Pittsburgh before the 2009 season.

Cook had an $11,125,000 option with a $500,000 buyout.

Harang declined his $5 million player option but does not get a $500,000 buyout because he fell 14 1/3 innings short of the 185 specified in his contract. San Diego declined a $6 million option on Qualls, who gets a $1.05 million buyout.

Hawpe gets a $1 million buyout rather than a $6 million salary.

K-Rod Becomes Free Agent After Brewers Decline Option

The Brewers have declined the mutual option on reliever Francisco Rodriguez's contract for 2012, making him a free agent.

The option was worth $17.5 million.

Rodriguez's contract was reworked when he was traded from the Mets, changing it from an option that would have become guaranteed had he finished 55 games.

Used as a setup man by the Brewers, Rodriguez gets a $4 million buyout, up from the original $3.5 million.

Brewers Expect To Discuss Extensions With Greinke, Marcum

The Brewers expect to sit down with some of their young players to discuss contract extensions this winter.

Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder will be a free agent and will garner a ton of attention, but general manager Doug Melvin expects to discuss deals with pitchers Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum as well.

Greinke and Marcum will both hit the market after the 2012 season.

"We have to sit down and look at the whole layout of the ballclub," Melvin said. "We've done that preliminarily, what we want to do long-term. Starting pitching is a key thing, but we have some other players we might sit down with, too, and talk about long-term deals."

Brewers Mum On Fielder's Future With Team

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin declined to answer most questions about Prince Fielder and potential negotiations with the soon-to-be free agent because his staff is still in the process of evaluating the season.

Milwaukee will have an exclusive window of five days after the World Series ends to negotiate with Fielder, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll immediately make an offer.

Melvin said he plans to meet with principal owner Mark Attanasio and manager Ron Roenicke in a few weeks in Los Angeles to map out a strategy.

Attanasio has said the Brewers will be part of the "sweepstakes" to sign the 27-year-old first baseman.

Fielder, who was picked by the Brewers in the first round of the 2002 amateur draft, made $15.55 million this season -- a record one-year contract for an arbitration-eligible player.

Greinke Would Have Accepted Trade To Rangers

Zack Greinke, who was traded from Kansas City to Milwaukee last offseason, says he would have accepted a trade to Texas.

The Brewers lost to the Cardinals in the NLCS, while the Rangers are representing the AL in the Fall Classic.

Greinke did reject a trade to the Nationals.
