Arizona Acquires Marquis From Washington

The Diamondbacks have acquired right-hander Jason Marquis from the Nationals.

Marquis is 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA in 20 starts for Washington. Arizona will assume the remaining $2.47 million of his contract.

The Nationals get minor league infielder Zach Walters, who was a ninth-round pick in the 2010 draft.

Brewers Get Hairston Jr. From Nats

The Brewers acquired utility player Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Nationals on Saturday.

In exchange, Washington received minor league outfielder Erik Komatsu.

"Jerry is a valuable addition to our ball club with the injures to Carlos Gomez and Rickie Weeks," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said.

"He is a versatile player who has experience at every position except catcher and pitcher. He also provides an energetic and veteran presence."

Brewers Deal Catcher Nieves To Braves

The Brewers have sold Triple-A catcher Wil Nieves to the Braves.

Milwaukee received $1 in return, according to general manager Doug Melvin, who proposed the deal after Atlanta lost All-Star catcher Brian McCann to a rib-cage injury on Tuesday night.

The move also allowed the Brewers to clear a spot at Triple-A Nashville for prospect Martin Maldonado.

D-Backs' Drew Breaks Ankle Sliding Home

Arizona shortstop Stephen Drew broke his right ankle sliding into home plate in the bottom of the fourth inning against Milwaukee on Wednesday night, according to an Associated Press report

The Diamondbacks said surgery was likely for the everyday shortstop, the anchor of the team's defense.

Brewers, Royals Discussing Betemit

The Brewers are still in contact with the Royals about Wilson Betemit, according to a source.

No major progress has been made in talks.

Betemit is hitting .281 with three home runs and 27 RBI this season. In just 57 games, he has an on-base percentage of .341.
