Greinke Discusses Adjustment, Anxiety In New City

Zack Greinke is adjusting to Milwaukee and has denied rumors that he waived his no-trade clause in order to avoid pitching in New York or Boston.

"There's more people to ignore in New York or Boston than there are in Milwaukee," he said, "but I would still ignore them, probably."

Greinke met Tuesday with a small group of reporters huddled into an even smaller room at Maryvale Baseball Park for his first interview since reporting to camp more than a week ago.

He talked candidly about the challenges facing a Major Leaguer with social anxiety disorder, a condition diagnosed five years ago this spring that almost permanently pulled Greinke away from baseball. He said he's surprised he came back at all, and explained the "stupid" way he was pushed into pitching in the first place, back in high school when he preferred to hit and play the field.

"Baseball, in my opinion, would be a lot better if you could just make the same salary as everybody else in the world and you don't deal with any of the other stuff," Greinke said.

"But that's not how it is. The main thing is I want to pitch against the best players in the world, and you can't do that playing in a pickup baseball league in your town."

Brewers Want To Avoid Arbitration With Marcum

The Brewers are hoping to avoid arbitration with right-hander Shaun Marcum.

Milwaukee has not made the date for their meeting with Marcum public knowledge.

"I talked to [agent] Rex [Geary] yesterday and we might talk again today," Brewers director of business operations Teddy Werner said Tuesday.

"Through the whole process, I've remained hopeful of reaching an agreement. I'm still optimistic we can get something done."

Marcum, acquired from Toronto in a trade in December, filed a salary request of $5 million and the Brewers offered $3 million.

Brewers Want To Bring Another Title To Wisconsin

The Brewers want to bring another championship to Wisconsin in the wake of Green Bay's Super Bowl triumph over Pittsburgh on Sunday night.

"We're going to do everything we can to bring another championship to Wisconsin," said reliever LaTroy Hawkins.

Ryan Braun, a buddy of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, said before the Super Bowl that he can feel the anticipation building for the Brewers, now that the rotation has been improved.

"There's definitely a buzz around the Packers," Braun said, "but there's a buzz around this baseball team, too. People are genuinely excited, probably more so than they've been in years. The last time I can remember anything like this happening was when we traded for CC [Sabathia in 2008], but that was such a short period of time. This is more of a prolonged period of buzz for the players, too. We all stay in touch, and everybody is really excited to get started."

Liriano's Deal Could Impact Marcum Talks

The Twins and Francisco Liriano agreed to a one-year, $4.3 million deal on Saturday, which could impact talks between the Brewers and Shaun Marcum.

"Liriano is definitely relevant to the Marcum discussions," said Brewers senior director of business operations Teddy Werner.

Milwaukee and Marcum are trying to avoid a hearing that's believed to be scheduled for Thursday in Phoenix.
