Scout Thinks Hoffman's Changeup Is 'Gone'

Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman, baseball's all-time leader in saves, blew his third opportunity of the young season on Tuesday night.

"I'm pigeonholing myself into situations where the hitter can be more patient and doesn't have to offer at (the changeup). That's pitching behind in the count. ... It's more of an 'out' pitch than a 'get back in the count' pitch," Hoffman said after Milwaukee lost to Pittsburgh.

The changeup that he once threw at any point in the count has been non-existent this season.

"His changeup is gone," an American League scout said.

Howard Deal May Increase Fielder's Price Tag

The Brewers couldn't have been happy to see the Phillies announce a five-year, $125 million extension for Ryan Howard earlier this week.

The development will likely raise the price tag of first baseman Prince Fielder, who Milwaukee would like to sign to a long-term deal but may not be able to afford him.

Fielder can't become a free agent until after the 2011 season, but Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune writes that the Brewers can't afford to wait that long to decide what to do with their slugger.

His numbers compare with those of Albert Pujols, Howard and Mark Teixeira, and he's younger than all three.

Uecker To Have Heart Surgery

Hall of Fame Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker will undergo heart surgery on Friday and will miss the next 10-12 weeks.

Milwaukee made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

Uecker, 75, has been calling play-by-play on Brewers radio broadcasts since 1971 and was inducted into the broadcasters' wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
