Cubs Make Room For Bradley?

The Cubs and Rockies appear close to a deal involving pitcher Jason Marquis, which could allow Chicago to sign free agent hitter Milton Bradley.

Sources confirmed Tuesday night that the Cubs and Rockies are close to a trade that will send Marquis and most of his $9.8 million contract to Colorado for embattled reliever Luis Vizcaino.

It has been considered a foregone conclusion throughout most of baseball the last two weeks that Bradley is headed to the Cubs, with mainly the payroll issue delaying the inevitable.

Looper Close To Signing With Brewers

Reliever Braden Looper is reportedly close to signing with the Brewers after he was not offered arbitration by the Cardinals.

Looper, 12-14 with a 4.16 ERA in 33 starts in 2008, will get a chance to start with Milwaukee having lost CC Sabathia and likely Ben Sheets.

Trot Nixon Signs With Milwaukee

On Thursday, the Brewers announced they had come to terms with Trot Nixon, who agreed to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. Nixon will get an opportunity to win a spot on the bench for the Brewers, who are in need of left-handed bats.

"When I talked to Trot a couple of days ago, I told him I hope he is next year's Gabe Kapler," Brewers' GM Doug Melvin said. "He's a guy that still wants to play, still has that great work ethic.

"We think he's worth a shot. On a Minor League contract, it's a low-risk situation."
