Milwaukee Brewers Wiretap

Sheets Placed On 15-Day DL, Might Be Done For Season

Ben Sheets was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday with a torn back muscle and might miss the rest of the season.

Sheets left Friday's game against Atlanta in the eighth inning with what the Brewers said was a strained upper back. He awoke Saturday with discomfort and had an MRI exam, which revealed a tear of the latissimus dorsi, a muscle in the upper back that moves the shoulder.

Brewers team physician Dr. William Raasch said the injury typically requires four weeks to two months to heal.

"There's a lot of swelling," Raasch said. "We can't tell you how quickly he'll heal. Best-case scenario is 15 days, if he's feeling great. Worst case, two months."

Brady Clark Leaves Game After Bruising Right Rib

Brewers center fielder Brady Clark left Milwaukee's game against St. Louis on Wednesday after bruising his right rib cage trying to break up a double play in the third inning.

Clark slid hard into second baseman Hector Luna and both stayed down for a minute. Luna's right ankle appeared to bend awkwardly on the play. Clark jogged back to the dugout but didn't come out for the fourth inning.

Clark, who leads the NL with 45 multi-hit games and ranks second with 147 hits, was replaced by Chris Magruder.

Brewers Extend Ned Yost's Contract

The Brewers exercised the club option for manager Ned Yost for 2006.

The Brewers are 52-54 this season, Yost's third as manager. He has a 187-242 record overall with Milwaukee, which hasn't had a winning season since 1992.

"Ned's work ethic, communication with both players and front office and his passion to have the Brewers succeed have not changed since the day he took this job," general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement Monday. "To be able to blend young, less-experienced talent with experienced players and stay the path of winning games is a tough assignment."

Before coming to the Brewers, the 49-year-old Yost spent a dozen years on the Atlanta Braves' coaching staff, where he was the bullpen coach from 1991-98 and the third base coach from 1999-2002. He also managed in Atlanta's minor league system, compiling a 197-223 record with Class A Sumter of the South Atlantic League from 1988-90.
