One general manager who has been monitoring the A.J. Burnett sweepstakes predicted the Marlins would let Sunday's non-waiver trade deadline pass without moving the strikeout artist.
The GM, who requested anonymity, added his own recommendation for what the Marlins should do with the prospective free agent.
"They're better off keeping the guy," the GM said Thursday. "They might as well go for it. Whoever they get is not going to replace the guy. They'll just end up with a lesser talent or a younger player."

The Phillies are one of the teams trying to get Danys Baez, and the reason is they believe they can trade closer Billy Wagner for a starting pitcher.
Both the Red Sox and White Sox have indicated to Philadelphia they might be interested in sending A.J. Burnett there in exchange for Wagner if they could get Burnett from the Marlins.

Mark Redman hasn't been able to get a contract extension from the Pirates, but he'd explore signing one with the team that acquires him before the Sunday non-waiver trading deadline.
And it's almost a certainty that Redman will be gone before that date.
"If it was a team I wanted to continue to play for," Redman said Monday afternoon, when asked if he'd continue pursuing an extension. "I'd like to stick around and keep from moving from place to place. If the team has good potential, I fit in the rotation and I could help them out, I'd consider it."
The Florida Marlins would appear to fit that criteria. Redman went 14-9 with the Marlins in 2003, his lone season in the National League prior to his arrival in Pittsburgh this year.

The latest bit of information, according to a source, is that the Florida Marlins still are looking to deal starter A.J. Burnett, and if they pull the trigger, they intend to do it before Burnett pitches again Saturday.
That doesn't mean the Sox are ready to be the team the Marlins deal with, but it would allow them some breathing room if a swap is made. Indications are the Marlins still want to unload third baseman Mike Lowell in a Burnett deal. If the Sox relent and take on Lowell, they'd have a day to move him to another team if a three-team deal can't be done on the day of a trade.
The players who've been named in trade rumors with the Marlins are Damaso Marte, Jose Contreras, Joe Crede and minor-leaguer Brandon McCarthy. They wouldn't all be going in a potential trade, but all four have come up in various scenarios.
''I expect that, [and] I've got to be prepared for that,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday about constant rumors. ''I've talked to [GM] Kenny [Williams] about it. Nothing is going on. It's not going to be easy, not just for Kenny, but for baseball. A lot of people, there's not too much out there that you can get. We're prepared for that. My coaching staff is ready for nothing to happen.''
