Luis Arraez Collects Four Hits In Padres Debut

May 5, 2024 1:28 AM

Luis Arraez had four hits and an RBI in his first game after being traded from the Miami Marlins, Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run homer in San Diego's eight-run seventh inning and the Padres routed the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 on Saturday.

The Padres made a massive deal Friday, acquiring Arraez from the Marlins along with nearly $7.9 million in a trade for four players. The two-time batting champion didn't join his new team until about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, but wasted no time in producing, going 4 for 6 while scoring two runs.

"Clearly an amazing approach and I can see why he is the rightful moniker of 'The Sprinkler,'" Padres manager Micke Shildt said.

Marlins-Yankees Start Pushed Back Due To Solar Eclipse

Apr 5, 2024 7:48 AM

The scheduled start time for Monday's game between the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins has been pushed back because of the total solar eclipse.

The Yankees were initially set to host the Marlins at 2:05 p.m. ET, but the start time has been delayed four hours.

"After reconsidering the challenges of playing through Monday's solar eclipse, including potential in-game delays, Major League Baseball and the Yankees have rescheduled the start time of the Yankees-Marlins game on April 8 at Yankee Stadium from 2:05 p.m. to 6:05 p.m.," the club said in a statement.

Apr 4, 2024 5:18 PM

Miami Marlins right-hander Eury Perez will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2024 season, the team announced Thursday.

The decision came after Perez visited Dr. Keith Meister for the second time in approximately two weeks. He will have the procedure on his right elbow on Monday.

"I know Eury is really frustrated," Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said. "He's really disappointed, but he also understands that this is a minor setback in what's going to be a really long career."

Jazz Chisholm Unhappy With Marlins' Open Roof

Apr 1, 2024 8:22 AM

Jazz Chisholm, Jr. wasn't happy with the Miami Marlins' decision to open the retractable roof on top of LoanDepot Park this weekend.

The facility's roof was open for three of four games against the Pittsburgh Pirates, all of which the Marlins lost.

"That we couldn't see," Chisholm said after Sunday's loss, when asked what made Pittsburgh's relief pitchers such a challenge in the series. "That's all. I feel like the shadows were really -- we're not used to playing in shadows. We normally play inside every day.

"So, when we get a shadow for three of the four games at home for the first time of the season, it's kind of hard to adjust to. You know, we're used to the roof being closed and being able to see every at-bat. It's kind of tough to see when it's black out there and you're facing a guy throwing 101 [mph], you know?"

Chisholm hit a grand slam in the loss, but all told in the series, Miami was outscored 31-17.

Miguel Rojas Calls Out Jazz Chisholm Over Explosive Critique

Mar 28, 2024 8:30 AM

Miguel Rojas was bothered by recent comments from former teammate Jazz Chisholm, saying "you don't even know me," and implying that the Miami Marlins star should "respect everybody" in the clubhouse.

Rojas and Chisholm were teammates on the Marlins for parts of three seasons from 2020 to 2022, which were Chisholm's first three years in the Major Leagues.

During an appearance on "The Pivot" podcast, Chisholm referred to that period as the "worst three years of probably my life" and took multiple shots at an unidentified team "captain," an apparent reference to Rojas, who was the Marlins' de facto captain at the time.

"You can't be a team leader when you've got guys that's been in the clubhouse that's been in there nine or 10 years even though they suck," Chisholm said. "They've been there for nine or 10 years and the team calls them the team captain. But they're not a good captain, they're not a good person, you're not even a good athlete at this point. You're just here and you're bringing down the young guys that are supposed to be good."

Rojas spent parts of eight seasons with the Marlins before being traded last year to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The veteran infielder said Tuesday that Chisholm is "entitled" to his opinion of his playing abilities but bristled at the apparent attack on his character.

"Whatever you want to say about me as a player, you can have that opinion," Rojas said. "But you saying that I'm a bad person when you don't even know me, that's kind of what bothers me."
