Dodgers Bat Pierre 9th, Pitcher 8th

Juan Pierre batted in the ninth slot on Wednesday night, allowing pitcher Eric Stults to bat eighth.

"I've been threatening it, right?" Manager Joe Torre said. "It's just seemed like a situation, with a player like Juan, he'd be freer to steal and stuff with [Rafael] Furcal hitting behind him instead of the pitcher. To me, it makes sense with a guy with speed. I just don't want to take away some of his tools from him."

Torre said he considered batting Pierre eighth when he started Sunday in Colorado.

Dodgers' Milton Making Push For Call-Up

Veteran lefty Eric Milton has pitched very well for Triple-A Albuquerque as of late, which could merit a call-up to the Dodgers soon.

Milton has pitched 12 shutout innings in his two most recent starts.

Meanwhile, young pitchers James McDonald and Clayton Kershaw both struggled this past weekend.

Could Brewers Take Pedro Off Market?

The Dodgers claim that they haven't had any discussions with free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez since the offseason, and the Brewers are emerging as a candidate to sign the veteran.

"All of our conversations on Pedro took place in the offseason," said L.A. owner Frank McCourt. "I have not been made aware of any talks beyond those."

Nine Months Later, Manny-Bay Still Even

On July 31, 2008 the Red Sox traded Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers in a three-team deal that netted them Pirates left fielder Jason Bay.

Ramirez energized the Dodgers en route to a playoff appearance last summer, and ultimately re-signed with the club to lengthen his stay in Los Angeles.

However, the Red Sox are content to have Bay in left field, despite Ramirez's stature as a future Hall of Famer and one of the most engaging players in sports today.

Ramirez, who will make nearly $24 million with the Dodgers this season, is hitting .328 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

Bay, who will make less than $8 million from the Red Sox in 2009, is hitting .321 with four home runs and 16 RBIs heading into Sunday's action.

It can also be argued that Bay plays better defense than Ramirez, but it's the batting statistics that are the most shocking.

Bay has a 0.494 on-base percentage and a 0.661 slugging percentage.

Ramirez, the much more heralded hitter, has a 0.463 on-base percentage and a 0.563 slugging percentage.

Therefore, Bay's OPS is 1.135, ahead of Ramirez's 1.025.

The Red Sox are thrilled to have rid themselves of the distractions Ramirez sometimes created, while paying Bay roughly a third of the salary for the same and, at times, better production.

On the other hand, the Dodgers are fine swallowing Ramirez's fat contract because he provides a kick to their lineup that appears to affect other hitters and puts people in the stands.

Agent: Mulder Will Sign Soon

Agent Gregg Clifton says that Mark Mulder has been working out and could sign with a team within a week.

Mulder is also expected to work up to 100 pitches in a minor league game within the next few weeks.

The Dodgers are among "six to eight" teams interested in Mulder, according to Clifton.
