Mike Piazza is among a handful of players that have been singled out as a steroid user in a new book by Jeff Pearlman, and Tommy Lasorda has rushed to the former catcher's defense.
"I don't believe that at all," said Lasorda. "He worked so hard. I saw him in the weight room working out all the time. Whatever (is in the book) is hearsay. I just don't believe it. He comes from a family that's full of good people.
"I wouldn't comment on it if I didn't feel strongly about it. He has too much to lose. And he's such a nice young man. He goes to church, he's got a nice family. I know him. I know what kind of man he is and I just don't believe it."

Pedro Martinez is reaching out to prospective suitors, but finding little interest in his $5 million-plus asking price.
The Royals, before signing free-agent right-hander Sidney Ponson to a minor-league contract, rejected an overture from Martinez because they were unable to afford him, major-league sources say.
Several of Martinez's friends, including the Dodgers' Manny Ramirez, have told him that he needs to be more realistic with his salary desires, sources say.
The Dodgers would be interested in Martinez if he dropped his price dropped to the $1 million to $2 million level.

Jason Schmidt pitched three innings against the Brewers on Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits, and the Dodgers are still unsure of what to do with him.
"Schmidt was OK, he got his work in," manager Joe Torre said. "It's a process. He looked like he was pushing it a little bit, but he had no problems physically."
"I don't think he's done enough pitching," Torre said of Schmidt being with the team to start the season. "I don't know, we'll have to wait.
"Since we don't necessarily have to make that decision right now, we'll wait as long as we can before we have to. But I still think it's going to be a little ways for him."
