Cespedes Thriving In Shadow Of Fellow Rookie Trout

Yoenis Cespedes is enjoying a great season, but a majority of national attention has been received by fellow American League West rookie Mike Trout.

Trout is the obvious choice for AL Rookie of the Year and maybe even MVP, but Cespedes has meant a ton to the Athletics.

Oakland is 61-35 with Cespedes in the lineup, 12-22 without.

"Trout deserves all the accolades he's getting," manager Bob Melvin said. "But I don't think he means any more to his team than Yoenis means to ours."

Trout Reaches 25 Homer, 40 Steal Plateau

Mike Trout homered on Tuesday night against the Red Sox, making him the first rookie and youngest player in history to amass 25 home runs and 40 steals.

"It's awesome, it's great," said Trout. "I really don't look at the individual stuff right now -- not until the season's over. First goal right now is to get to the playoffs."

Trout wasn't called up from Triple-A Salt Lake until April 28, but he leads the AL in batting average (.340), OPS (.995), steals (41), runs (101) and Wins Above Replacement (8.8).

Angels Scoring More Since Pujols Injury

Albert Pujols has not played since Wednesday because of an injured right calf.

The Angels are averaging 6.3 runs in the three games since the first baseman last played. They have won twice, including a 14-13 win over the Red Sox on Thursday night that skewed the team's scoring average.

Pujols is hitting .283/.344/.533 this season and Los Angeles is averaging 4.7 runs per contest.

Trout Youngest Ever To Record 40 Steals, 20 Home Runs

Mike Trout (21 years, 16 days) has become the youngest player since at least 1901 to record 40 steals and 20 homers in a season.

Trout swiped his 40th base in the third inning of a 14-13 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

The center fielder also leads the American League with a .345 average, 99 runs and 1.011 OPS.

"All those stats don't matter unless you reach the playoffs," Trout said. "But it's been pretty surreal."

Scioscia Speculation 'A Distraction' For Angels

Both ownership and management have denied that Mike Scioscia's job is in jeopardy despite the fact that the Angels are currently third in the American League West.

Jerry Dipoto, the team's first-year general manager, refuses to blame the long-time manager for the struggles.

"We're 3 1/2 games out in the wild-card race, but you'd think we were in last place," Dipoto said. "Quite frankly, it's a distraction. Mike has been the manager of this team for a long time. He has a very long track record that suggests he's qualified. I say, let him do his job."

The Angels entered the season with a $159 million payroll, having signed big-name free agents Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson in the offseason.
