Scioscia Meets With Wells About Slump

Angels manager Mike Scioscia sat down with outfielder Vernon Wells to discuss the hitter's struggles recently.

Scioscia and hitting coach Mickey Hatcher met privately with Wells for a couple of hours before Friday's win over the Rays.

It was at least the second time Wells, who is hitting .181, has met with Scioscia behind closed doors this month.

"We talked about taking a breather and things like that," Scioscia said. "It's really just communicating, trying to get ideas and concepts going back and forth to see if we can do something to get a player where he's in a comfort zone."

Jered Weaver Looking For Historic 6-0 Start

When the Angels face the Athletics on Monday night, Jered Weaver will try to become the first pitcher in franchise history to start the season at 6-0.

Weaver's 1.23 ERA is accompanied by 39 strikeouts and just nine walks -- none in a complete-game gem at Texas in his previous outing.

"It takes a lot to get off to a start like this," Weaver said. "The guys have been playing really well."

He enters the start against the A's having recorded just one win in his last 11 starts against Oakland. He is 3-6 lifetime with a 3.45 ERA vs. the A's.

Angels Still Appreciate Lackey's Contributions

The Angels will face Red Sox right-hander John Lackey on Sunday afternoon.

Lackey was a key part of the Angels' rotation before signing with Boston as a free agent prior to the 2010 season.

He won Game 7 of the 2002 World Series with the team.

"This guy, the feelings will never leave for what he did for our club," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He was the lead dog, a big part of the teams that won divisions. He left a huge imprint on this organization. He's in another uniform now, and when he's out there, he's going to try to beat us -- and we're going to try to beat him. You wish him well -- except when he faces us."

Pineiro To Make Rehab Start Monday

Angels starting pitcher Joel Pineiro will make a 60- to 70-pitch rehabilitation start for the Inland Empire 66ers on Monday at High Desert.

Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said the team will evaluate afterward whether Pineiro needs another minor league start or is ready to return to the big club.
