Matthews Wants To Be Traded Or Released

Gary Matthews Jr. wants the Angels to either trade or release him this winter.

Matthews, who has two years and $23 million left on his contract, wants to go where he will play everyday.

"I don't expect to be back; it's time to move on," Matthews told the Los Angeles Times. "I'm ready to play for an organization that wants me to play every day. This organization has other plans, and that's OK."

Matthews requested a trade last March and again around the All-Star break but did not make his demands public.

"There were things bigger than my situation," he said, "and that was this team trying to win a championship."

Guerrero Cites Mom's Comfort Level In Anaheim For Wanting To Re-Sign

Angels slugger Vladimir Guerrero hasn't yet thought about whether his time with the team could be over.

His six-year, $85 million contract is up at the end of the season.

"I'm not thinking so much about the uncertainty, but I'm thinking about my mom and how comfortable she feels in Anaheim," Guerrero told the Los Angeles Times. "That's always one thing that I'm going to think about regarding free agency.

"It would be very gratifying to continue to play with the guys I've known here and have gotten used to."

Scioscia: Playoff Schedule Compromises Game

Angels manager Mike Scioscia believes that baseball's postseason format is "ridiculous."

Extra off-days were added a couple of years ago to suit the television partners.

After playing 162 games over 182 days, the Angels and Yankees played just eight each over 20 days prior to Sunday night's Game 6 in the ALCS.

"I think you lose a lot of the integrity of what the season means when you have three days off at the end of the season to let other teams maybe reset their starting rotation, which is an advantage of clinching early," Scioscia said. "That's negated when any team can do it just by getting to the playoffs."
