Angels Defend Gesture Of Pouring Alcohol On Adenhart's Jersey

One day after the Angels doused Nick Adenhart's No. 34 jersey with beer and champagne, players and coaches found themselves defending a gesture that some bloggers, columnists and fans criticized as insensitive considering that Adenhart was killed by an alleged drunk driver.

"We wanted to celebrate with him like he was here," reliever Kevin Jepsen, whose locker is a few stalls away from Adenhart's, said Tuesday. "If he was still here with us, we'd be pouring beer on him just like everybody else in here.

"It had nothing to do with the drunk-driving accident. We were just celebrating and wanted to make him a part of it."

Said third baseman Chone Figgins: "He's our teammate. We're allowed to do what we want."

Scioscia: Abreu Is Angels' MVP

Angels manager Mike Scioscia says that Bobby Abreu is the team's MVP this season.

"He's brought a special need for our club, a guy with 100 RBIs, 92 runs, all the walks, and he's hit in different spots in the lineup," Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times.

"Outside of Chone Figgins, we didn't have a lot of guys working counts. Bobby has brought that. He's a swing guy, a guy who can set the table and drive in a lot of runs."

Scioscia opted to pick Abreu over Kendry Morales, who many consider a candidate for the AL's MVP award.

Angels Clinch AL West, Honor Adenhart

The Angels wrapped up their fifth AL West title in six years with a win over the Rangers on Monday night.

The team held Nick Adenhart's No. 34 high in the middle of their celebration.

The pitcher, 22, died in an April car accident.

"We remembered Nick before we started," manager Mike Scioscia said. "We've played the whole year with heavy hearts. But it was never about us, and it isn't about us. It's all about supporting Nick's family in any small way, and we're going to bring Nick's memory forward."
