Lackey Not Expecting Much From Angels In Extension Talks

John Lackey and the Angels began extension talks earlier this month, but now appear to be on life support.

Lackey is looking for an extension of at least five years for in the neighborhood of $80 million to $90 million, and has set a deadline of opening day for a deal to be complete.

Asked whether his medical setback could affect negotiations, he said, "I've got nothing for you. I'm not going to get into it."

Asked whether the talks were dead, he added, "Not yet. But we don't have much time left."

Angels' Matthews Could Waive No-Trade Clause

Angels outfielder Gary Matthews isn't happy with his role, and could waive his no-trade clause in order to facilitate a move.

"We've had conversations that we like to keep private, keep behind closed doors," Matthews said. "We've had candid conversations with Tony (Reagins, the Angels general manager). We've had candid conversations with Mike (Scioscia, the Angels manager). They've been honest with me. I've been honest with them."

Matthews is projected to be the team's fifth outfielder, despite the five-year, $50 million contract he signed before the 2007 season.
