Mariners' Mateo Breaks Hand Lifting Weights

Mariners right-hander Julio Mateo will miss the rest of the season after breaking his left hand before Monday's game against the Angels.

While lifting weights in the Mariners clubhouse, Mateo had a 35-pound weight slip and pin his hand between the weight and the rack. He broke the fourth metacarpal and was placed on the 60-day disabled list. Mateo's hand will be placed into a splint for the next few days and be put into a permanent cast on Friday.

Rodriguez Would Have To Be Dealt To Another Big City

Alex Rodriguez's difficult 2006 season continues to be, well, difficult.

"Could you move Alex Rodriguez?" one front-office guy said to Mike Lupica not long ago. "Yeah, you could. It would probably have to be to another big city, like one of the Chicago teams or Los Angeles. But here's the thing to remember about him: People constantly call him a $25 million ballplayer. Well, that's what he gets, sure. But the Yankees are only paying, what, about $15 million of that? If you wanted to, you could move a $15 million player who puts up numbers like his."

Angels' Weaver Ties AL Rookie Mark

Jered Weaver joined Whitey Ford as the only rookies in AL history to win their first nine decisions, holding Seattle to three singles over seven innings in the Angels ' 3-0 victory over the slumping Mariners on Friday night.

A lanky 6-foot-7, 205-pounder with a deceptive delivery, good command and a mix of speeds to keep hitters off balance, Weaver became just the fifth pitcher in major league history to begin his career 9-0 as a starter.
