Escobar Agrees to Extension with Angels

Escobar, a 30-year-old right-hander, is 5-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 10 starts this season.

"Kelvim has been a key contributor to the success of our pitching staff," Angels general manager Bill Stoneman said. "I'm excited about the prospect of him pitching for the Angels through the 2009 season."

Escobar signed a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the Angels on Nov. 24, 2003, after pitching five full seasons and parts of two others with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was 11-12 with a 3.93 ERA in 33 starts in 2004, and 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA in seven starts and nine relief appearances last season.

Anaheim Council Votes To Appeal Name Change

The Anaheim City Council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to appeal the court decision that allowed the Angels to continue to use Los Angeles in the franchise name.

Councilman Harry Sidhu cast the only negative vote.

The paperwork for the appeal is expected to be filed later this week, and the appeal process then could take a year or more.

After the team changed from Anaheim Angels to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last year, the city filed suit in Orange County Superior Court charging that the move breached a lease agreement for Angels Stadium, which is owned by the city. A jury ruled in the team's favor earlier this year.

The Angels selected the younger Weaver's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, and he will make his major league debut Saturday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

Weaver, a 23-year-old right-hander who was the Angels' first pick in the 2004 draft, was 4-1 with 1.89 ERA in nine starts at Salt Lake. He allowed 44 hits while walking eight and striking out 66 in 57 innings, and pitched a complete-game shutout with Angels general manager Bill Stoneman in the ballpark.
