Molina Could Sit Out Season

The Dodgers' pursuit of free-agent catcher Bengie Molina has ended for now, apparently without the club having made a formal offer to the former Angels Gold Glove winner.

Meanwhile, Molina told the Yuma (Ariz.) Sun over the weekend that he will sit out the upcoming season if he doesn't receive the salary he is seeking, which is believed to be in the $6-million range.

"I think I have done enough to deserve something," Molina told the paper on Saturday, while attending an alumni game at Arizona Western Community College. "If I don't get that type of deal, I think I'm willing to sit out and see what happens next year. I hope it doesn't come to that."

Dodgers Coming Into Molina Picture With The Price Tag In Freefall

Bengie Molina's price tag has dropped so far that the Dodgers are interested in signing him for one year, multiple sources said Wednesday.

General Manager Ned Colletti has spoken twice to Alan Nero, the agent for the former Angel Gold Glove catcher, and could make an offer this weekend.

The Toronto Blue Jays have expressed the most interest in Molina, who turned down a three-year, $18-million offer from the New York Mets in November but now might get only a one-year contract.

The Blue Jays have reportedly offered Molina $4 million for one year, and the New York Yankees also might be interested.

Lackey Signs One-Year Deal With Angels

John Lackey agreed to a $3.76 million, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, bypassing salary arbitration.

The Angels also avoided arbitration with catcher Jose Molina by reaching a two-year deal.

Lackey went 14-5 with one complete game in 33 starts for the Angels last year. He led the team's starters with a 3.44 ERA and 199 strikeouts.

The 27-year-old right-hander was 8-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 15 starts after the All-Star break.

"John has been an integral part in the success of our pitching staff," general manager Bill Stoneman said. "We look forward to another impressive season from him."
