The Royals have reached an agreement on a contract with former Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton.

The one-year deal is worth a guaranteed $4 million.

The contract, which also includes performance bonuses, is contingent on Broxton passing a physical exam Wednesday.

Moore: New Labor Deal Won't Hurt Royals

Royals general manager Dayton Moore doesn't believe the new labor agreement will hurt his team.

The new deal places limits on spending for the draft and international acquisitions.

"We really believe that whatever the rules are, we have to adapt to them and be successful within the confines of the structure," Moore said. "That's our mind-set. I think there is still a lot of flexibility in this new agreement for you to be creative."

The Royals overhauled their farm system in recent years by making major expenditures in the draft and through their international operations.

"It always comes down to the same thing," Moore said. "It comes down to scouting judgment and your ability to create an environment that develops players and allows them to reach their ceiling."

Report: Royals, Bruce Chen Agree To Two-Year Deal

The Royals agreed to a $9M, two-year contract with left-hander Bruce Chen on Wednesday, solidifying their starting rotation heading into next season, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the team had not announced it.

Sanchez Ready To Roll With Royals

Jonathan Sanchez, traded from San Francisco to Kansas City this week, is ready to get going with his new team.

He's excited despite winning a World Series in 2010 with the Giants and now pitching for the Royals, who haven't made the playoffs since 1985.

"It's exciting, you know?" Sanchez said. "It's exciting to make the playoffs, and that's what we want, to be a young team that makes the playoffs."

Sanchez struggled most of last season, partly due to a case of biceps tendinitis, going 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA before missing the final month with a left ankle sprain.

Royals Will Consider Re-Signing Francis

The Royals are open to re-signing Jeff Francis, who went 6-16 with a 4.82 ERA in 31 starts this past season.

"We're still open-minded with that," Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore said. "We'll have to see how the rest of the free-agent market unfolds. You can't discount the innings that Jeff Francis gave us last year."

The Royals bolstered their rotation Monday by acquiring lefty Jonathan Sanchez from San Francisco with minor-league pitcher Ryan Verdugo for outfielder Melky Cabrera, but club officials admit they'd like to add another starting pitcher.
