Royals Try To Downplay Interest In Bedard

In the wake of reports that the Royals are "going hard" after free-agent pitcher Erik Bedard, assistant general manager J.J. Picollo is trying to cool rumors.

Picollo told the team's website that the reports have been overstated.

He acknowledged Kansas City's interest in Bedard, but added that the club wants to conduct more research on his health.

Royals Very Interested In Bedard

Erik Bedard was linked to Kansas City by yahoo.com which reported the Royals were "going hard" after the free-agent left-hander.

"He's certainly a name we've talked about and will continue to talk about," said Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo, "but I think that's probably an overstatement. Right now there's a free-agent pool out there and we're looking into every one of those guys. And with Erik being left-handed it stands out a little bit more."

RealGM Note: The Royals most recent big free agent splash was when the signed former Seattle pitcher Gil Meche.

Royals Trade Tug Hulett To Boston

The Royals have traded infielder Tug Hulett to the Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. Hulett was designated for assignment on November 20.

The 26-year old hit .111 in 15 games for the Royals in 2009 after being claimed off waivers from the Mariners on February 19.

In addition to the Hulett trade, the Royals secured Unconditional Release Waivers on right-handed pitcher Julio Pimentel, who is now a free agent.

Sources: Mets Interested In Guillen

If the Mets can't sign a free agent like Matt Holliday and Jason Bay, they'll try to work a trade with the Royals for Carlos Guillen.

Sources told the New York Daily News of possible trade discussions between the Mets and Royals, but nothing is considered close.

Kansas City wants an inexpensive outfielder in return for Guillen, and New York could offer Angel Pagan.
