Royals GM Speaks With Guillen After Incident

Kansas City General Manager Dayton Moore met with outfielder Jose Guillen after he confronted a heckling fan on Tuesday night, according to Associated Press.

Guillen had to be restrained by catcher Miguel Olivo, third base coach Luis Silverio, and others when a fan harassed him in the fourth inning of a loss to the Rangers.

"It's an unfortunate situation. It really is," Moore said Wednesday. "Jose has got to remain focused to what happens on the baseball field. It is certainly inappropriate to engage in any conversation with the fans during a game. You need to ignore it and respond in a way that doesn't draw attention to yourself. We'll just continue to work with Jose about managing what he says and how he responds. It is something we continue to manage."

Royals Sign Kip Wells

The Kansas City Royals have signed right-handed pitcher Kip Wells to a Major League contract for the remainder of the 2008 season. The Royals will make a corresponding 25-man roster move when Wells joins the club, which is expected later today.

Wells, 31, had spent the entire 2008 season with the Rockies organization, making the Opening Day start for Colorado before pitching out of the bullpen. He missed two and a half months after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot in his right hand before returning to the Rockies after four rehab stints in late July. He was 1-2 overall with a 5.27 ERA in 15 appearances, including two starts, but had a 1-1 record and a 3.32 ERA (21.2 IP, 18 H, 8 ER, 18 SO) in his 13 relief appearances. He posted a 2.45 ERA in 10 games (1 start) away from the mile-high air of Coors Field.

A 10-year veteran, Wells has compiled a 65-93 record and a 4.64 ERA in 246 career outings, including 205 starts, for the White Sox (1999-2001), Pirates (2002-06), Rangers (2006), Cardinals (2007) and Rockies (2008). His best season came in 2003 for Pittsburgh when he was 10-9 with a 3.28 ERA in 31 starts.

Royals Come To Terms With Eric Hosmer

The Kansas City Royals tonight announced they have reached an agreement with first round draft choice Eric Hosmer, the third overall selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

?We are delighted to come to terms with Eric Hosmer. We felt that he was the best high school position player in the draft,? said Dayton Moore, Royals? senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager. ?I also have to recognize the support of David and Dan Glass, and the great work of our scouting staff, for helping to get Eric into our organization.?

A first baseman from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., Hosmer, who bats and throws left handed, hit .470 with 11 homer runs, 27 RBI, 49 runs, and 14 stolen bases as a senior.

Hosmer participated in the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic in 2007 and was named the 2008 Player of the Year by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Baseball America's 2008 draft preview rated Hosmer as the high school player with the best power as well as being the prep talent that is closest to the majors.
