While the Royals haven't confirmed they've offered Braves assistant Dayton Moore the team's general manager job, the current GM Allard Baird revealed that he was fired Wednesday morning, The Kansas City Star reported.
"I was told this morning," Baird told the paper. "Beyond that, I don't have anything to say."
Sources tell the paper that Moore is getting a five-year contract and complete control over baseball operations.
Moore, 39, is expected to take control, officially, next week after baseball's two-day draft. Assistant general manager Muzzy Jackson will replace Baird on an interim basis, the paper reported.
The Royals are mired in one of their worst seasons ever, and rumors of Baird's demise had floated for weeks.

Kansas City great George Brett shot down any speculation that he might be interested in becoming the club's next general manager.
?I?d never do it,? Brett said by phone. ?Personally, I think it?s one of the two worst jobs in baseball. That and being a hitting coach.
"Every time a hitter comes back after making an out,? Brett said, ?he?s in a panic, and you?ve got to fix whatever?s wrong for every guy. No, thanks. I wouldn?t want that.?
Back to the GM job: Brett doesn?t see the glamour in it.
?I guess it would be fun to make trades and sign free agents and all that,? he said. ?But then you get second-guessed on every single move. Everybody thinks they can do that job, but it?s tough.?

Speculation is mounting that Royals general manager Allard Baird could be fired this week as the rebuilding team's struggles continue.
Baird, who became GM in June 2000, has spent 18 years in the Royals' system and is signed through this season. He was credited for directing the team's strong turnaround in 2003 and concentrating on minor-league development. But the Royals have had back-to-back 100-loss seasons and have baseball's worst record this year at 7-22.
