Astros Claim Coste Off Waivers From Phillies

The Astros have claimed catcher Chris Coste off waivers from the Phillies.

Coste, 36, will join Houston on Saturday.

He made 98 starts for the Phillies last year, hitting .263 with nine homers and 36 RBIs.

Bees Force 52-Minute Delay At Petco Park

The Astros defeated the Padres after waiting out a 52-minute delay in the top of the ninth inning caused when a swarm of bees took over left field at Petco Park.

"It's how this year's going. Bizarre things. You think you've seen it all in baseball and you're going to see something new," said Houston's Geoff Blum , who hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs.

Brewers To "Take A Look" At Backe

The Brewers are taking a look at pitcher Brandon Backe, who was designated for assignment and refused a trip to Houston's Triple-A club on Monday.

Backe, 31, missed two months with an oblique injury and didn't pitch well in five total appearances. He's due $1.55 million this season, but his new club would only be responsible for a prorated portion of the $400,000 Major League minimum.

"You have to at least take a look," Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said.
