Tejada Decides To Pass On WBC

Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada has decided not to play for the Dominican Republic at next month's World Baseball Classic.

He is expected to make his decision official on either Wednesday or Thursday.

Tejada is reportedly behind Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez on the depth chart at shortstop.

"I heard from somebody that they're going to make me play first base or another position," Tejada said. "I don't want to do that. I feel I'm a good enough shortstop for me to be playing my position. If they think that I'm not, it's good to let somebody else play.

"I love my country and I respect my country. I don't want to do something where I can hurt my country. If I play another position that I've never played, I might hurt my country. I might make an error, because I don't know how to play first base. I don't know how to play another position. I could do something wrong, and I don't want to do that."

Erstad OK Despite Facial Fracture

Houston's Darin Erstad suffered a small fracture near his right eye during workouts on Sunday, but has been cleared to participate in most baseball activities.

"A ball kicked funny off the grass and caught me in the cheekbone," he said. "It was just a line drive, and I went to catch it. Well, I missed it."

He participated in some drills on Monday with the team.

"I've been hit in the face before," he said. "It's no big deal."

Tejada Apologizes To Astros For Distractions

Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada apologized to the team recently for the distractions that his legal woes have caused the team.

Tejada is accused of lying about using performance-enhancing drugs in the past.

According to Houston general manager Ed Wade, Tejada's teammates "saluted him appropriately" with a short round of applause after his apology.

"He was a stand-up guy for us all last season, and he continues to be," Wade said.
