Houston Releases Woody Williams

The Astros released Woody Williams on Friday.

Williams, who will make $6.5 million this season, was not immediately available for comment.

"From a veteran standpoint, he deserved every opportunity," Manager Cecil Cooper said. "We just didn't get there. I'm sure Woody is probably just as disappointed as anyone he didn't quite get to where he wanted to be."

Houston's Matsui May Miss First 13 Games

Kaz Matsui could miss the first two weeks of the season because of a slower-than-expected recovery, according to the Houston Chronicle.

That would leave him out of the lineup for the first 13 games of the 2008 regular season.

Matsui was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday.

"Hopefully it could happen," Astros' Manager Cecil Cooper said of Matsui coming off the DL early, "but we're probably being overly optimistic."

Astros' Matsui To Begin Season On DL

New Astros' second-baseman Kazuo Matsui will begin the season on the disabled list after undergoing successful surgery to repair an anal fissure, according to MLB.com

He will need extra time to recover before making his regular-season debut with Houston.

"We won't put him on [the DL] right away, but from the report from the doctors, it's a foregone conclusion he'll start the year on the DL," General Manager Ed Wade said.
