Clemens Gives Up Homer To His Son

Roger Clemens' son took the Rocket deep on his first real pitch of spring training, crushing a trademark fastball over the left-field fence.

"That was probably one of the harder fastballs I cut loose," Clemens said after throwing to son Koby and other Houston Astros minor leaguers Monday at Kissimmee, Fla. "He got my attention."

Then the Rocket got Koby's. The next time his oldest son came to the plate, Roger buzzed him high and tight with another fastball. The younger Clemens dodged the pitch, then smiled at his father.

"He was like, 'Sorry about that pitch inside. I was trying to change the view of the ball for you a little bit,"' said Koby, a third baseman who was drafted by Houston last summer. "I said, 'I knew what you were doing."'

Lidge Ahead Of Normal Pace

Brad Lidge admitted Monday he is pitching with more gusto now than he normally would at the end of February, especially while throwing a simple round of batting practice to his teammates.

Lidge, who is leaving on Thursday for Arizona to begin training with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, threw to Brad Ausmus, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Adam Everett and Morgan Ensberg on Monday morning during workouts at Osceola County Stadium.

"They came out aggressive today," Lidge said. "They were swinging at everything. It was fun to see where they were measuring up and where I was measuring up. They've got some good swings going now."

Clemens To Pitch At Astros' Minor League Minicamp

Roger Clemens will pitch to Houston Astros prospects on Monday and Thursday during the Minor League minicamp at Osceola County Stadium.

General manager Tim Purpura confirmed on Sunday that the Astros received permission by Major League Baseball to allow Clemens to pitch to the Minor Leaguers, one of whom is third base prospect Koby Clemens. The minicamp began earlier this week and will continue until the remainder of the Minor Leaguers report to Kissimmee on March 5.

Clemens, 43, is training for the World Baseball Classic and asked the Astros for the opportunity to pitch in their minicamp.

"He's not doing this by our request," Purpura said. He's doing this at his request, in preparation of the World Baseball Classic."

The Most Famous Shoulder Of Spring Training

Jeff Bagwell is expected to go through the first full-squad workout with the rest of his teammates today, though this spring training will be anything but routine.

The Astros consider Bagwell, whose deteriorating right shoulder forced him to undergo surgery and miss 115 games last year, a disabled player. They are hoping to recoup most of the $17 million he is due this year through an insurance policy.

Bagwell has been working out vigorously to prove he can still play, and the Astros are going to give him a chance to do so.

"The plan is to find out where is he at," general manager Tim Purpura said. "He's had the opportunity to try and hit, and did so in September and in the playoffs to some extent, but the throwing part of it is the unknown right now.

"What can he do? And when he begins throwing, how does it affect his ability to hit? Those are big unknowns right now."

Rocket A Longshot For Texas

Two weeks ago, Rangers owner Tom Hicks and a group of Rangers officials met face-to-face with Roger Clemens, but conceded the Rangers are still a long shot to sign the 43-year-old seven-time Cy Young Award winner, the owner said on Tuesday.

"He lives 15 minutes from Minute Maid Park [in Houston], so that?s a big advantage," Hicks said. "He?s a true champion. He took Texas to the College World Series and Houston to the World Series. We made the presentation to him that he can do the same with the Rangers.??

Hicks also indicated the Rangers have no issues with Clemens waiting until May -- or perhaps longer -- to start pitching this season.
